The BARREL Mission Thus Far

Yesterday with having launched 7 Balloons, we were about 1/3 of the way through our goal of launching 20 payloads this Southern Summer. To mark this milestone, I made a movie of all the payloads thus far. The quicktime version is the best, so let me know if you can't view it and I'll put up a lower resolution mp4 version up if need be.

  1. Great movie; thanks! Everyone at home is enjoying these. Don't mean to be too naive, but are the colorful swoops we see intermittently artifact, entertainment or do they signify some actual event in the weather?
    Thanks again!

  2. No Problem. Thanks for pointing out that I haven't described that here on the blog. The original colors represented time, so each color block was an hour of time. Now the colors also represent time, but the day is divided into three parts and then shades change at each hour. This change was due to the fact that the site I normally generated the KML files at went down forcing me to sit down and write my own code to produce KML files. Since I couldn't easily find the same exact colour scheme I went with a new one. I also today just added a new effect. The balloons will show up in red when they are below the altitude for good science.

I'm hoping that in the not to distant future I'll be able to get the colors to represent L-value using a given magnetospheric model. Any other ideas or suggestions for improving the mapping is always welcome! I'm new to mapping in google so would love any and all advice!
